Roger Cotton - A Long Way Back
« Thread Started on Jan 7, 2009, 7:26am »

Ever wonder about what the other ex-Splinter Group member are/have been up-to [image] ...

Well it looks like Roger Cotton released an album in November 2008, featuring ex-Bluesbreaker Buddy Whittington (John Mayall disbanded the Bluesbreakers recently to concentrate on other projects). It contains Roger's new versions of the Splinter Group songs "Nice Girl Like You", "Real World", "Nothin' Gonna Change It" and "Dangerous Man", plus other originals ... perhaps intended for the next Splinter Group album which didn't happen. (But they were also planning a "Blues Don't Change vol. 2" before the break-up).
The music is similar to Splinter Group's sound. [not surprise's]

You can listen here:

Some more info, including sleeve notes:

The album is dedicated to Peter Green (among others) for teaching him about the blues. So I guess there is no evil between the two, at least not from Roger's side.

Anyone know what the other ex-SG member are/have been up to?
Stroud? Tolfree? Or perhaps most interesting .. Watson?

Hi, the answer is partly in your post, both Cotton and Stroud are part of Buddy Whittington's touring band. They will be back in the UK in April when Buddy tours as support to Gary Moore!

Hi and [image] greenose [image] pleased to meet you,

Thanks for your input and answer, I think stumbler was trying to get some input [image]
I'll be interested in going to see them playing,

and the chance of seeing them playing alongside another favorite guitarist of mine, Garry Moore 8-)

Thanks for the welcome. I'd be keen to see them myslef. I saw both the Splinter Group and Whittington with the Bluesbreakers on tour several years ago. Sadly Gary's Glasgow concert clashes with Joe Bonamassa's rescheduled Gateshead Sage concert, so I may have to miss out! :(

Hi greenose and [image] [image] and for your input [image] [image]

I saw Joe Bonamassa's at "Manchester" last year, great guitarist, very fluid playing, nice tone sound, well worth seeing, [image]

I can see your hassle there greenose, both are worth seeing,

I will get to go and see Buddy Whittington's with Garry Moore, on Fri 1st May 2009 at the Apollo - Manchester,

Thanks for posting [image]

Thanks for the welcome. As far as my live concert dilemma is concerned, I am able to see Joe Bonamassa on a later date in the same Glasgow venue that Gary Moore is playing, therefore I could sell my ticket for Gateshead, the problem is that my friend I am attending with is not keen to switch to the other venue as that date is the birthday of a family member! I still have a few months to resolve it!

The influence of Peter Green on Gary Moore’s playing is apparent, but I’d also suggest he has been an influence also on Bonamassa. Joe’s version of So Many Roads is to my ears closer to the version Peter recorded with John Mayall than the Otis Rush version, and of course Joe did cover Another Kind Of Love on his last album. Joe has also been inspired by Peter’s sound, particularly his use of reverb as this quote from an interview with Guitar Messenger shows:
JB: I’m a big fan of reverb - I always want more than less. I’m a big fan of those old records, like the Peter Green tone with that big reverb panned to one side. I just think that’s cool. Kevin and I always have to compromise on how much reverb I want… he’d probably prefer a little bit less.

In the same interview he says:
“My heroes were the English guys – Paul Kossoff, Peter Green, Eric Clapton. There’s so many - there’s Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher – another Irishman who played the same things, but don’t tell him that. But those guys were my guys – Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. There’s a certain sophistication to their approach to the blues that I really like, more so than the American blues that I was listening to.”

Well my problem has resolved itself, so I will be able to see Cotton and Stroud with Buddy (and Gary) in April, and Joe B a few nights later, both in Glasgow :)
